Much of Staveley's older housing was built for ironworks and colliery workers in Barrow Hill, Poolsbrook and parts of Middlecroft, and the plumbing in these terraces often reflects that — narrow pipe runs, bathrooms fitted into what was originally outside space, and heating systems that have been patched rather than properly replaced over the years.
